I used him almost exclusively in my band when he used to reside in the NYC area, as he always brought so much knowledge and artistry to the music. And combined with his multi-instrumentalist abilities, Chris Brown is a unique talent that's not often found.

The Chuck Israels Jazz Orchestra @ Jimmy Mak's

  • Jimmy Mak's 221 NW 10th Ave Portland, OR, 97209 United States (map)

As always, it's a joy to play through the music of Chuck Israels in front of an appreciative audience, as is always the case at Jimmy Mak's. And for those of you who aren't familiar with Chuck, I encourage you to read this recent write up on him from Down Beat Magazine.

The Chuck Israels Jazz Orchestra returns to Jimmy Mak’s to celebrate the release of their latest recording “Joyful Noise” performing the music of Horace Silver. Silver’s music has been a source of lifelong inspiration for Chuck Israels and he was deeply moved by the legendary pianist/composer’s passing last year.

The orchestra has recorded Chuck’s exquisite and adventurous arrangements of Horace’s music, which it will perform during its highly anticipated return to Portland’s premier jazz venue. The performance will also feature material from orchestra’s critically acclaimed recording “Second Wind: A Tribute To The Music of Bill Evans” as well as some new compositions by Chuck Israels.

Revered as one of the preeminent bassists in the world, Mr. Israels has performed and recorded with Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Bud Powell, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, J.J. Johnson, John Coltrane, Rosemary Clooney, Eric Dolphy, Patti Austin, Gary Burton, Barbra Streisand, the Kronos String Quartet, and countless others.

Among Chuck’s many recordings as a bassist, some outstanding ones include“Coltrane Time” with John Coltrane; “My Point of View” with Herbie Hancock; “Getz au Go-Go” with Stan Getz; and many recordings with the Bill Evans Trio, including “The Town Hall Concert”; “The Second Trio”; “Trio ’65”;and “Time Remembered”.

This is truly a special opportunity to enjoy one of the world’s true jazz treasures.

You can reserve seating with a dinner reservation…please call Jimmy Mak’s at 503-295-6542 for reservations.
