The Christopher Brown Quartet
The moment that so many people in both Portland and throughout the country have been waiting for is finally here. The famed 1905 Jazz club is back in action and under new management. As someone who maintained a strong weekly residency with this club throughout the first iteration of its existence, I undoubtedly have a soft spot for this venue, as it gave me a platform to further develop my brand and band sound. Not to mention, it did a fantastic job of carrying the cultural torch forward for Jazz in Portland after the closing of Jimmy Maks at the end of 2016. So while you might here of a few smaller private events that will be taking place at the club before April 19th, this date will be the official re-opening of this iconic venue to the rest of the world. And I couldn’t be more excited and honored to help kick it off!
With that said, know that this event will undoubtedly sell out. So as soon as tickets are available, you’ll want to get your right away!!!

"Behind the Scene" w/the Christopher Brown Quartet
In an effort to create meaningful culture building moments within a Jazz context for high school and college aged musicians (as well as band instructors), drummer/bandleader Christopher Brown will host an ongoing series entitled “Behind the Scene” with his quartet. And what will separate this event from any other like it is that it’ll combine the Jam session and clinic experience into one epic memory maker.
Throughout this event, the audience will have an opportunity to electronically submit music that they’d like clarity on from members of the band, so as to watch how Christopher’s band problem solves their questions in real-time, in addition to hearing his group perform their own music, followed by members of the audience getting an opportunity to perform with his group in front of their peers.

Greg Goebel Trio @ The Underground
Over the past several years The Underground has developed a strong reputation for providing their patrons with an elevated dining experience that’s equally matched by its rotation of live Jazz performers. So when you can combine the two, you in fact have a winning recipe that will draw a crowds from a distance. So between the ambiance of this venue, coupled with a group that’ll be led by Aretha Franklin’s last pianist [Nick Rolfe], you’ll want to make your reservations early if you want to make it into this room.

The Christopher Brown Trio
In the wake of the sea of change that has taken place over the past several years, it has been inspiring to see how people have leaned into their creativity and resiliency to create the kind of positive outcomes that they want. And one such organization that’s working to resurrect the thriving atmosphere that once defined the Pearl District of downtown Portland, is the Pearl District Neighborhood Association. So what better way to build back than through the tried and true nature of creating cultural alignment among enough people, which music has been doing since the beginning of time. Therefore, I’d like to encourage you to join us for this simple, yet powerful, gathering to help signify that Pearl district can in fact bounce back better than ever!

DeMiero Jazz Fest w/Kim Nazarian
The DeMiero Jazz Festival is literally as old as I am (1977), and primarily exist to create space for the proliferation of vocal Jazz. But of course, there’s typically no “vocal Jazz” without the other instruments, which is where my presence comes into play. So I’ll be looking forward to teaching and performing throughout this multiple day event alongside vocalist Kim Nazarian and pianist George Colligan.

MYS Jazz Ensemble @ Hallowed Halls
It should be clear by now that music education is a big part of my life (especially Jazz). And since I’ve made it a point to insert myself into as many circumstances as possible to pass along the types of insights that have taken me the last 35 years to develop, I’m happy to present a performance of Miles Davis’ seminal 1959 Kind of Blue album on January 8th @ Hallowed Halls with an ensemble of students that I teach through the Metropolitan Youth Symphony (which is purportedly the only youth symphony program in the country that offers a Jazz component). So if you’re a fan of Jazz, as well as are curious to see what efforts are being made within the Portland area to imbue the next generation with an understanding of this uniquely American creation, then I encourage you to come to this FREE performance.
Note that this performance won't last long (30 minutes). So if you intend to come, be sure to arrive early enough to find parking so you don’t miss a moment of this performance!

BLACK TIE / WHITE NOISE: ALADDIN SANE
For the past several years my quartet has presented its take on several different David Bowie albums, all of which have been either sold out shows or very close to a sold out evening at the Jack London Revue in downtown Portland, OR. So for this installment, we’ll be tackling Bowie’s 1973 record Aladdin Sane.
What makes Bowie’s music interesting is that unlike many of his contemporaries, he didn’t rest on his past hits to sustain his career. Instead, he kept creating, and in a way that was an honest expression of his musical interests. And while he continued to evolve with the times, he still stayed true to the musical theatre, rock & roll, R&B, and Jazz aesthetic that marked the beginning of his career as an artist. And as such, this kind of creative ethos is what makes his music and what we do as a group so compatible. Therefore, we look forward to showcasing yet again what can be created when two different musical aesthetics collide (yet joined by the same creative ethos).
This performance will consist of an early and late show. So click the following links for more info and tickets for either show.

Low Bar Chorale (feat. Christopher Brown)
This group is one of the most amazing groups I’ve ever had the pleasure of performing with. And it’s because my longtime childhood friend (from as early as kindergarten) has stumbled upon a very simple and profound realization, which is that group singing has a force multiplying effects on community building. So instead of trying to find the right words to sum up this group, click the links below to get a little sneak peak into what the world of the LBC is all about.

The Christopher Brown Quartet "Pressure Cooker"
While I enjoy the energy of large events, such as a music festival, I really enjoy the smaller settings of clubs, where the level of interaction between the performers and their audiences are higher. That said, it doesn’t get more intimate than when you’re in the exclusive environment of one’s home, as the transformative power of relationship building can’t be beat within this context. And so I encourage you to act now to reserve a space within the intimate setting of what has been dubbed the Broadway House in Eugene, OR.
"While most people will appreciate the efficiency of a pressure cooker, there are others who can also appreciate the science behind them as well. And as such, this idea of knowing how to skillfully apply the right amount of pressure to any song, so as to help create the perfect kind of ear food, is just one of the things that the Christopher Brown Quartet has become widely known for over the past decade throughout Oregon."
*Note: You’re invited to bring a food or beverage item for a potluck gathering with the band following the performance. Also, while masks and pro-vaccination statuses are encouraged, they’re not mandatory.

The Nathan Eklund Quintet
The thing that has separated The 1905 from all other Jazz clubs throughout the greater Portland area (and arguably the state of Oregon itself) is the degree to which pathways have been created between the club and all the other primary Jazz hubs throughout the country. And as such, I couldn’t be more grateful for this condition.
That said, we’ll be switching things up for this particular week as we’ll not only be playing on a Monday, but we’ll be backing up NYC trumpeter Nathan Eklund. We first had him as a guest a few years ago, and how he’s returning the favor by reversing the role the time around. And so we can’t wait for you all to experience what happens when East meets West. So this will certainly be one that you’ll want to ink into your calendar now before tickets sell out!!!
