The Greg Goebel Trio
From straight ahead jazz, funk and pop to the avant-garde, Greg Goebel is considered one of the Northwest's first call pianists.
Praised by critics for "manifesting his ideas with the immediacy and sureness of a master craftsman" (Jazz Times) and as "a force that is stretching known boundaries and moving the music into new territory" (Larry Koonse), pianist Greg Goebel shows himself as firmly rooted in tradition while simultaneously proving to be a unique voice among a new generation.
“Greg has personally done more to elevate the performance level of our students than any other person, graduate or undergraduate, who has attended the University of Oregon in at least the last fifteen years,” said the school upon his graduation.
Since school, Goebel has recorded and toured extensively in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, South America, and Asia.
Touring, recording, and co-producing with singer Gino Vannelli for over 10 years, his contributions can be heard on the CD, The Best and Beyond, the DVD, Live in L.A., as well as the most recent Wilderness Road.
A longtime member of David Friesen's Circle 3 Trio, his work can be heard on Friesen’s 2009 CD, Five and Three, the 2011 CD, Circle of Three, the 2013 release, Brilliant Heart, 2014’s Where the Light Falls and Triple Exposure released in 2016.
In 2013, Greg’s first album as a leader, Rainy City, was released to critical acclaim.
“Goebel deserves all the praise hereabouts. He’s a burner!" (George Fendell/JSO)
"Greg Goebel is one of about half a dozen pianists that are redefining the instrument, the literature and the useful purpose of the piano and doing it with the skills of a master. 5 Stars!" (Brent Black/@CriticalJazz)
In addition to keeping a busy schedule in Portland, Goebel has had the pleasure of performing with notable musicians such as John Handy, Antonio Hart, Dick Oatts, Terrell Stafford, Dave Pietro, Larry Koonse, Houston Person, Byron Stripling, Pete Christlieb, Ken Peplowski, Ben Wendel, Allison Miller, Eric Marienthal, Steve Wilson, and many others.

"Behind the Scene" w/the Christopher Brown Quartet
In an effort to create meaningful culture building moments within a Jazz context for high school and college aged musicians (as well as band instructors), drummer/bandleader Christopher Brown will host an ongoing series entitled “Behind the Scene” with his quartet. And what will separate this event from any other like it is that it’ll combine the Jam session and clinic experience into one epic memory maker.
Throughout this event, the audience will have an opportunity to electronically submit music that they’d like clarity on from members of the band, so as to watch how Christopher’s band problem solves their questions in real-time, in addition to hearing his group perform their own music, followed by members of the audience getting an opportunity to perform with his group in front of their peers.

This performance will for sure be something that is seldom ever seen anywhere. In other words, it’ll be me leading a group as a saxophonist! Now if you’re scratching your head on this one, then know that I’ve actually been playing the sax longer than my primary focus on the drums. So since I normally only play it in public on special occasions, this too will be one of those occasions. And with that said, this will most certainly sell out. So you’ll want to get your tickets ASAP on this one!!!

JOIN PJCE AT WILF’S FOR HAPPY HOUR JAZZ ON THURSDAY NIGHTS
There has been a real concerted effort on the part of a few key organizations here in Portland to help raise the profile of this music we call Jazz; and to the point that it can once again occupy a space within the normal discourse of society. And one such org is the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble (PJCE). And one of the areas that they’re looking to activate is the area in around our train station, as it’s one of the oldest and most significant landmarks we have. So I want you to enjoy this performance as well as show your support for this worthwhile mission of helping to make Portland the thriving hub of creativity and prosperity here in the NW that it once was.
Pre-purchase your tickets and meet us under the clock tower at Union Station for a fun happy hour hang.

What do leather jackets, soft knitwear, and sleek wool coats have in common? A word. And that word is cozy. So needless to say, few things at this time of the year can compete with a warm hot toddy, smells that are reminiscent of Thanksgiving, and the sleek sophistication of Jazz played at the highest order. In short, we always aim to give you a luxury experience without the luxury price tag. So get your crew, grab your tickets, and come make some unforgettable memories with us.

The Christopher Brown Quartet "Unearthing the Extraordinary"
While I enjoy the energy of large events, such as a music festival, I really enjoy the smaller settings of clubs, where the level of interaction between the performers and their audiences are higher. That said, it doesn’t get more intimate than when you’re in the exclusive environment of one’s home, as the transformative power of relationship building can’t be beat within this context. And so I encourage you to act now to reserve a space within the intimate setting of what has been dubbed the Broadway House in Eugene, OR.
"My interest in creating the kinds of transformative events that can leave a lasting impression is rooted in the belief that out-of-the-ordinary experiences always offer people an opportunity to audit their view of themselves and the world around them."
*Note: You’re invited to bring a food or beverage item for a potluck gathering with the band following the performance. Also, while masks and pro-vaccination statuses are encouraged, they’re not mandatory.

The Christopher Brown Trio @ "Jazz in the Pearl"
Lately there has been an uptick in the level of interest in Jazz music here in Portland, for which I couldn’t be more excited about. And as such, the Pearl District Neighborhood Association (PDNA) has chosen to enter the arena by investing into the presentation of this quintessentially American creation as a way to catalyze a sense of economic and cultural vibrancy back into what was once one of the most vibrant parts of downtown Portland. So needless to say, this performance represents the beginning of a cause and exciting journey of surprises for how this audacious agenda unfolds. And we want you alongside us every step of the way!

There’s never enough I can say about my longtime musical compadre Greg Goebel. I know for a fact that I wouldn’t have the brand presence that I do across the city of Portland and beyond without Greg as my right hand man. And as such I always relish any amount of time I get to perform with him. So within the context of this performance, he’ll be the lead personality, which I take great pride in.
With that said, if there was ever a venue to catch us in, it would be the house of The 1905, Oregon’s #1 place for live Jazz (which consequently is also one of the top places in the world for live Jazz according to Down Beat Magazine). For more info on Greg, click the link here.

While it’s been a while sine this group has performed together, every time we do it’s an event worth talking about and remembering. And just like the feeling of reconnecting with old friends is what it’s like to perform with this group, we hope that you’ll use this performance as an excuse to do the same with friends you’ve been meaning to reconnect with as well. After all, what better way to make a meaningful memory with friends and loved ones than through the shared experience of live music!!

Greg Goebel Quartet @ The Broadway House
For the past handful of years, I’ve had the pleasure of performing in Eugene, OR. at a few notable venues. But one in particular that stands out as being special is the Broadway House. Over the past decade the owner of this home have opened their doors to hosting performances there as a way to connect with others, and for the music loving community in Eugene to find and connect with one another in an intimate setting. And so I find myself back there again this year with my longtime musical compadre, Greg Goebel (someone whom I’ve had alongside me for 90% of the performances that I’ve done here in the NW since my return in 2012.
So if you’re a real music fan looking for a real memory maker, and you live in and around the Eugene area, then you’re highly encouraged to put this on your calendar!

Christopher Brown Quartet ft. Dr. Lewis Porter
It has always been a dream of mine to repay in interesting ways those who have helped me along the way. And here’s yet another opportunity for me to do so. On 10/13 I’ll be creating space in one of the most important spaces that has helped me to further refine my musicianship. And that space is none other than The 1905. In short, I’m proud to feature one of my most important college professors, Dr. Lewis Porter, at this venue. This Grammy nominated artist has appearsed on 37 albums with people such as Dave Liebman, Marc Ribot, Gary Bartz, John Patitucci, Terri Lyne Carrington, Tia Fuller and many others, in addition to 10 of his own.
Since Dr. Porter is so well known across the globe as being a leading authority on all things related to Jazz history, we’ll begin both shows with a Q&A about John Coletrane, Thelonious Monk, and jazz in general.

The Christopher Brown Quartet + PJCE @ Montavilla Jazz Festival **FREE**
For the past 10 years now, the Montavilla Jazz Festival has worked to create a lane for themselves within the music producing ecosystem here in Portland. And through their steadfast efforts, they’ve continued to grow in popularity and relevance year-over-year. So needless to say, I’m proud to announce that I’ll be headlining at this festival once again. But this time I’ll be augmented by eight other musicians outside of my core quartet. So this will certainly be the largest undertaking of a group performance that I’ve ever done where my musical aesthetic is the principle focus.
The theme for this performance is called “Unearthing the Extraordinary.” And what better place to showcase this than in the caldera amphitheater in idyllic Mt Tabor park. Simply put, all the music is inspired by the monumental successes of six ordinary people who have accomplished extra-ordinary levels of success and impact over the years. And those people would be Phil Knight (Nike), Sara Blakley (Spanx), Wynton Marsalis (Jazz @ Lincoln Center), John Maxwell (Author), Gert Boyle (Columbia), Dan Wieden (Wieden & Kennedy).

The Swingin’ Sounds Arts Fair is hosting their inaugural event on Aug 10th with four performances (one of which is the Owen Broder Quartet). And like all music events like this, they work when the public supports them. As when we invest our time into activities like this, it sends a message to everyone that live performances are an integral part of how we humans connect and stay connected to the things and people that matter the most to us.
So we look forward to seeing as many people as possible participating in all of the activities associated with this event.

Internationally acclaimed and Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Charlie Porter first cut his teeth on the New York jazz scene in the late ’90s, while simultaneously studying classical trumpet performance at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of famed trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Though he has recorded many albums as a side musician, Porter has recorded three albums to date, as a leader, that have been garnering high praise. He recently released his third album "Hindsight" on the Origin label. Before that, his 2019 release “Immigration Nation” was voted one of the best albums of the year by DownBeat. His debut album “Charlie Porter,” released in 2018, featured a who’s who of Portland jazz musicians, including the legendary Mel Brown and Chuck Israels. It was hailed as "A testament to Porter's prodigious talent and imaginative creativity” by All About Jazz and as "Technical wizardry” by DownBeat Magazine. Charlie has toured the world as a side-man and band-leader in jazz and also as a classical soloist and chamber musician, performing and recording with many notable musicians and groups over the last twenty years ranging from jazz greats including Joe Zawinul, Winard Harper, Mike Longo, Paquito D’Rivera, Ira Sullivan, Aaron Diehl, Mike Holober, Jimmy Greene, Jay Thomas, David Berger, Charli Persip and Chuck Israels to classical artists such as Simone Dinnerstein, Sarah Chang, and Joyce DiDonato as well as world-music greats Goran Bregovic, Marcel Khalife, and Kim Duksoo, among many others. The Garrett Baxter Trio
Garrett Baxter has quickly become the most exciting and sought after Jazz bassist in Portland over the past several years (so much so that I had to snatch him up to be in my band). And as is to be expected, he’s now beginning to stretch his leadership chops. So this special performance will be so because of not only the musical bond that we now share, but because we’ll be joined by the pianistic juggernaut George Colligan and a special vocalist (who you won’t want to miss).
While most performances at the newly revamped 1905 tend to sell out, this will certainly sell out. So you’d be wise to secure your ticket ASAP!!!

And so with me being a devotee of drummer Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts (long time collaborator with Kenny), this musical meeting of the minds will surely be an exciting celebration of music and kinship.
